How Agencies Functions Effect the Public
The
Port Pirie Regional Health Service provides Acute, Primary Health and
Geriatric Care and education for both Staff and Community.
It supports regional health care initiatives and activities and aims to
provide professional guidance to all Health Care Service Providers within
the Region.
The Region encompasses some 32,000 people and focuses upon the principal
towns of Port Pirie, Port Broughton, Peterborough, Jamestown, Crystal Brook,
Orroroo, Booleroo Centre, Gladstone and Laura, all of which have Hospitals
and/or Community Health Centres.
How Public may Participate in Agency Policy
Development
This is achieved in a variety of ways by referring to the following:
 |
The Constitution Part 4 provides for the appointment of a Board of
Directors to include Community Consumer Members, a Staff Member and other
Members, the latter appointed by the Minister of Health. |
 |
A Public Annual General Meeting is held at which the Annual Report is
presented; this is a widely advertised meeting. |
 |
Community Consumer Representatives elected onto the Board of Directors
also serve on Sub-Committees of the Board, namely Clinical Governance,
House and Resource and Strategic Planning Committees. |
 |
There is Community Consumer representation on our Mental Health Advisory
committee and the Women’s Health Advisory group. |
 |
Diabetes Support Group consists mainly of Community Consumer
representation. |
 |
The Board is establishing a Consumer Advisory Committee to advise the
Board of Consumer issues. |
 |
An orientation package for Community Consumer representatives serving on
Health Service Committees has been developed by our Health Promotion Team. |
All of the above represent an opportunity for the public to participate in
Agency Policy Development.
Types of Documents that the Agency Holds
 |
A detailed index of current general policies, numbering in excess of 100. |
 |
In terms of other Administration guidelines and/or policies there are
comprehensive circulars, instructions and guidelines issued through the
South Australian Health Commission from time to time; the Port Pirie
Regional Health Service is an incorporated body under the provisions of
the South Australian Health Commission Act 1976. |
 |
Procedure Manuals are comprehensive and are regularly revised in order to
meet the relevant National Standards. |
 |
A comprehensive Newsletter from the Board of Directors is made available
on a six monthly basis to members of the public via a letterbox drop
throughout the Community. This Newsletter is also circulated to Staff. |
 |
A Weekly Newsletter is circulated throughout the Health Service for all
Staff. All Staff may contribute to the content of the Newsletter. |
 |
Publications – In the strict sense we do not have publications other than
the Annual Report, the Hospitals Constitution and By-Laws, however, as
would be evident from the General Policies Index there are a range of
in-house publications that are available. |
 |
Admission Kits/Brochures/Patients Rights – A copy of the current Patients
Handbook is available in the room of every Inpatient. |
 |
Information Bulletins – Staff Handbook and promotional brochures in
respect to the Regional Health Service are available and used for
recruiting purposes and Staff orientation. |
 |
Client Information – the Health Service has a Policy that provides for a
separate and distinct Unit Record (Medical Record) for every person
admitted as an Inpatient or Same Day Patient to the service, and for each
client registered with Community and Allied Health Service. That Unit
Record is comprehensive and contains a detailed progress of the patient’s
treatment/service. It is available for perusal upon application in
accordance with the provisions of FOI requirements. |
 |
Personnel – as referred to earlier staffing details may be observed by
referring to the current Annual Report. |
All records may be available and accessible to members of the public having
regard to requirements under the FOI Act.
Access Arrangements
By the very nature of the operations of the Health Service it functions on a
